Happy Thanksgiving!

From our ohana (family) at Haleiwa Super Market, we would like to wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving!  Thanksgiving is a day when families spend time with one another for a special meal.  Many people say what they are thankful for at this time.  Here at Haleiwa Super Market, we are thankful for our wonderful friends, family and customers, our illustrator Osamu Harada and for being able to work and live in beautiful Hawaii!

Here in Hawaii, our Thanksgiving meals tend to be a different from those on the mainland United States.  You'll usually find a mix of American, Chinese, Filipino, Hawaiian, Korean, Japanese, Portugese, Puerto Rican and more mixed into our meal!  Here is a photo of a Thanksgiving meal from one of our houses...everything look so ONO!

One common piece of Thankgiving lunch or dinner is the TURKEY!  Turkey is one of the traditional dishes on Thanksgiving Day.  Now, take a look at the photo above carefully.  Do you see the purple bread roll?  You must be wondering about this!  This is a sweet taro bread roll.  Many people in Hawaii enjoy eating this roll especially because it is made from the native taro root that grows here in Hawaii.

The real Hawaiian word for taro is "KALO".  Last year, Haleiwa town had a "Kalo Festival" which featured demonstrations, foods and gifts.  We found a great video from the festival which shows the kalo being pounded in the traditional way.
