Haleiwa's Famous Anahulu Bridge A.K.A. Rainbow Bridge
Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at 12:49AM If you ever look at photos of Haleiwa, you are certain to see a photo of its famous Anahulu Bridge. Known by many as "Rainbow Bridge", this completely white, art-deco structure was built way back in 1921 and crosses 161 feet over Anahulu Stream. It replaced a wooden bridge that was originally used to cross the stream. At 12 miles, Anahulu Stream is the longest watercourse on Oahu. This makes it a popular spot for kayaking and paddle boarding.
The Anahulu Bridge fell into a state of disrepair back in 2005 but has since been completely restored to it's original grandeur. The bridge was originally designed by Frank Ohrt and Guy Rothwell and cost $3.1 million to restore back in 2006. The bridge is listed on the National Historic Register, making it a significant historical landmark for Haleiwa Town and the United States.
The bridge is popular with photographers as well as young locals who like to jump off it's side into the stream below. On either side of the bridge, you will find famous Haleiwa shops and restaurants. Haleiwa Joe's is located on one side and Surf N Sea is located on the other. Remember to use ALOHA when crossing the bridge as it only has two narrow lanes. Traffic from both sides take turns letting each other cross.
