Delicious Sada's Malassada

Welcome to the world of Hawaiian Malassadas! (sometimes spelled as Malasada)  The Malassada was brought to Hawaii by portugese immigrants sometime around 1878....over one hundred years ago!  The portugese word "mal-assada" means "light-roasted" in Portugese.  Malassadas are balls of dough that have been fried in oil and then covered with sugar.

So where can you find an original North Shore Malassada?  The answer lies just a short 3-minute drive from Haleiwa Town.  In the town of Waialua waits a quaint and friendly bakery called PKB.  PKB stands for Paalaa Kai Bakery and has been in Waialua since 1970.  The bakery makes fresh SADA'S MALASSADA'S everyday.

Sadamu Oka was the original proprietor of the bakery.  "Sada" is short for Sadamu.  The same original recipe from 1970 is still being used.  Sada's Malassada's are fluffy and do not go flat unlike other Malassadas from around the island.  Even after they have gone cold, pop them in the microwave for 20 seconds and they taste wonderful!

We recommend that you call in an order or visit the bakery before noon as the Malassadas tend to sell out quickly.  For more information about Paalaa Kai Bakery, click here.
